What am I going to Zambia for?
I'm going there to work on a service project with my daughter and 16 others (9 youth, 9 adults) from a charity we are associated with - Communities Without Borders. Next week I'll be painting/glazing a community center, digging/building a latrine, building a library, facilitating an AIDS dialogue between US and Zambian youth in the squatter compounds around the capital Lusaka, or at least some of them.
Having said that, some of the main aims of the trip are to access how current monies are being used and to establish some personal connections with the community and their leaders over there.
In addition we are going to be assessing exactly what other projects communities here in the US could support in some way: we don't have a good handle on some of the other projects they have been asking for funding for: chicken rearing, knitting machine, tie-dying, etc.
We're also going to be meeting with our partner NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) and may even have "tea" with Kenneth Kuanda (1st President of Zambia after its independence).
We will be taking a side trip to a rural village in the SW of the country to start a new relationship between that community and CWB. Since we are down that way anyway this is going to give us the chance to go and see Victoria Falls too.
You'll here more when I get back and if things go as planned (or something close). For Fidelity folks I'll probably volunteer to do a brown bag session one Friday with slides and maybe a short video.
